How to grow organic pepper?
Seeding

Made on a tray, transplanting when the plants are about 10 cm long, with true leaves already formed and about 6 to 8 weeks after sowing.

Solo

The crop adapts well to light, sandy, fertile and well-draining soils to prevent root rot. The pH must be between 5.5 and 6.8. The soil must also have been worked well beforehand in order to allow correct root development due to the pivoting root.

Weather

The growth temperature varies between 20 and 27°C with night temperatures in the order of 16 to 22°C. Very hot nights lead to greater vegetative development at the expense of fruit formation and growth.

Fertilization

It is a somewhat demanding crop, and special attention must be paid to the supply of phosphorus and calcium in which if it is not at a sufficient level in the soil and the application of compost is also not sufficient, it must be supplemented with a mineral fertilizer.

Watering

The drop-by-drop system is a valid option for the crop.
Weed control

Mulching is a valid option, helping to avoid competition between weeds and the crop.

Pest control

Mites, aphids, screwworms, miner larvae and thrips are pests of the crop. To control the mites, biological control with predatory mites must be carried out, in addition to the application of azadirachtin and, if necessary, the application of powdered sulfur (if T <28°C). For the control of aphids, attention should be paid to moderate fertilization without excess of nitrogen, natural limitation with border hedges to favor the auxiliaries, biological fight with parasitoid or predatory hymenoptera, and if necessary, potassium soap can also be applied. or azadirachtin. For threaded caterpillars, use fresh manure, bait with bran + molasses + Bacillus thuringiensis in spraying on the ground next to the crop, the use of Bacillus thuringiensis in spraying and biological fight with Steinernema carpocapsae nematodes should be avoided. For larvae from Minas Gerais, they must be controlled through biological control with parasitoid hymenoptera, with the natural limitation with hedges and other honey plants that feed the adults of the parasitoids, and if necessary, azadirachtin may also be applied. For the control of thrips, plants that are favorable to anthochorid auxiliaries (such as marigolds and other compounds) and biological fight with predatory mites and anthochorids should be included.

Disease control

Powdery mildew and gray rot are two important diseases of this crop. To control powdery mildew, use wide calipers, moderate fertilization without excess nitrogen and, if necessary, the application of powdered sulfur. As for the control of gray rot, the remains of diseased plants should be eliminated, avoid excess of vigor, avoid water on the plants (drip watering is a good solution) as well as the regular application of bentonite clay.

Harvest

For immediate consumption or sale, harvest when the peppers are fully ripe. If, on the contrary, it is not for sale or immediate consumption, it can be harvested when the peppers are at least 80% of their final color, which in the meantime will be gained until consumption. The collection must be done using scissors that minimize the cut and this is as small as possible in order to avoid the entry of pathogens.

Post-harvest

They can be preserved at a temperature of 7-8°C and should not be placed next to vegetables that produce ethylene, such as tomatoes, which can lead to their sudden ripening.

Store in a cool, dry place.
