The Portuguese love their cabbages. In botanical terms, Portuguese cabbage is a unique group of cabbages among all other known cabbages around the world, such as red and white cabbage, Lombardy cabbage. Several studies have been devoted to these cabbages, which constitute an extremely important basis of the Portuguese diet. Another notable feature they are recognized for is their successful adaptation to acidic soils and oceanic climate. Portugal's long history of subsistence agriculture has determined that every village, or even every farm, has its own type of cabbage or variety. However, along with Galician cabbage, Tronchuda can be found throughout the Portuguese territory. This variety is preferred to accompany consada cod along with boiled potatoes. Voluminous, but delicate in taste, there is no Portuguese house that does not pay the highest honors.
