|avocado is an exotic fruit from the avocado tree (persea americana), one of laureáceas family tree native to south america, in particular mexico, and is currently cultivated in subtropical regions. it is a large tree (may exceed 30 m in height) and is best suited to moist soils; producing a mature plant ranges from 200 to 800 fruit per year. they are known more than 500 varieties of avocado, which explains the many types of avocado, different in shape, size and color. in portugal, this culture is mainly in the algarve and madeira. the total culture area is 320 hectares, yielding a production of 2903 tonnes, concentrating on the most algarve orchards, occupying an area of 88 hectares and producing 1893 tons. the wood, the occupied area corresponds to 88 ha, which gives 1010 tons. the edible part of the fruit is green-yellow slurry of pasty consistency, which involves a large lump 3 to 5 cm in diameter. the color of its bark varies from green to dark red, through brown, violet or black; their average weight ranges between 150 and 500 g.
